I went rollin, rollin, rollin, rollin, rollin down the hill to the river where I was cleansed at birth as I stumbled to my feet so dizzy almost ill I stood one foot in the crystal waters, one in the muddy earth to the east I saw the town that bore me turning grey to the west I saw a man silhouetted by the falling sun the waters got so angry, I jumped in to try and escape and ever since that day, I've been on the run and if you see me runnin won't you slow me down I need to find the light before mine's burnt out I went rollin down this old hill to where years ago, this man, I tried to kill they say you can never go home but it's been so long they say you can never go home but you can't deny where you're from I went rollin, rollin, rollin, rollin, rollin down the river almost drowning in the rage of my own heart's will as I washed up on the shore, I had to seek forgiveness stood up straight, held my head high, made my to that ol' hill atop the hill, across the waters, I saw that same old man my eyes grew wide, my heart fell silent, the river, it dried up like a bone and I went rollin, rollin, rollin down that hill once again rolled across that river bed, and I rolled on home and if you see me runnin won't you slow me down I need to find the light before mine's burnt out I went rollin down this old hill to where years ago, this man, I tried to kill they say you can never go home but it's been so long they say you can never go home but you can't deny where you're from I wen't rollin, rollin, rollin, rollin down the hill

how my eyes would brighten as they'd race across those horse farm fences all black and white and never ending I’d know I'd made it home once again we'd fly down old Nicholasville Road going to see ol' Aunt and Avue's place along the winding creek and hills so steep we'd follow I wish I was making that trip today blue, blue Kentucky that's how I still feel for you blue, blue Kentucky I wonder now, how do you feel for me? back home it's a different life where folks work hard and never forget to call where katydids and crickets sing the songs of the night and fireflies at dusk will lead you safely home that bluegrass can hypnotize like the scent of a million honeysuckle wet with dew sometimes when I close my eyes I swear I'm standing right there next to you blue, blue Kentucky that's how I still feel for you blue, blue Kentucky I wonder now, how do you feel for me? Yeah, back home, it’s a different life That so long ago I said good bye And how the days pass and the dwindling sands of time I’m still every bit as blue inside blue, blue Kentucky that's how I still feel for you blue, blue Kentucky I wonder now, how do you feel for me? I wonder now, how do you feel for me? I wonder if I could have been the son you wanted me to be

Cynthiana has a light to outshine the sun from a pole, a million miles high is where its hung where the words of a gospel hymn so softly are sung Cynthiana's light kept me brave and safe when I was young There's a farm road that leads to the end of days where a young boy's mind is likely to wander off and stray and the wiles of a wild eyed child can lead him so far away Cynthiana's light, so bright, could guide him home once again as lights do, hers began to dim and fade And all that remains in my memory are those gospel hymns she sang but I swear if I squint tight from a thousand miles away I can still see Cynthiana's Light shining down on me I can still see Cynthiana's Light shining down on me I can still feel Cynthiana's Light shining down on me

We all come from an Uncommon Wealth of of love and trust As the years and miles run from us Our hearts prove gold Though tears have flowed There still don't show No signs of rust To my mother And my fathers And theirs that paved our way No matter how far we may have strayed The blue grass grows Beneath our toes Everywhere we go Even to this very day

about

These songs are about the struggles of learning who you are and how to embrace where you come from. They are also about remembrance and recognition for the those and the times you care about most. Suite Kentucky is dedicated to my family, almost all of which hail from Kentucky, like me, and especially my grandmother, Zelma Brunker.
